Fingerstyle Fundamentals (Brachiating & Finger Twitch Training) From day 1 we have always wanted to get better. But if, like me, you have always tried to push your own boundaries, you actually might be taking the wrong approach. Because the secret to speed, stamina and accuracy is letting go of excess tension and developing an efficient “home base” (a state of calm readiness) from which you can burst into flames and immediately release back into. This workshop is designed to prevent repetitive stress injuries while at the same time learning how to surpass your current physical limitations. - Relevant for all levels of guitar proficiency. MUSICIANSHIP
Fretboarding (Ear-Training for Guitarists) Just like with learning a language, it is much easier to learn analytic listening if you focus on material that is relevant to your personal goals in music. If you are overwhelmed by strange modes and chords, why not for a start just become amazing at the 7 interval relationships of a transposable major scale to later easily recognize most anything else as a mere deviation thereof? And if the piano feels foreign to you and maybe you are insecure about your singing voice, why not just learn and master the material on your chosen main instrument? Unfortunately, a lot of guitar books and teaching methods can be somewhat counterproductive with all their six-string scale shapes and block chords that make finding one’s way around the fretboard seem rather complicated. The problem is that they ask to concentrate on too much information for what is actually necessary in any real moment of musical inspiration. By reducing the number of strings to focus on at any one moment, and learning single interval shapes, the students of this course should have a greater feeling of accomplishment and maybe even find joy in becoming able to play any melody that comes to mind (anywhere on the fretboard). |
TECHNIQUE
Percussive Fingerstyle (Extended Right Hand Techniques for Guitarists) Want to play beats and other cool stuff on your guitar? Yeah, me too! This course offers everything awesome I never learned in normal music school: from guitar percussion to flamenco techniques there will be tapping, slapping, drumming, strumming and the joyful mixing and matching of ideas from wildly different guitar styles. History and notation may be discussed where relevant. - The course “Fretboarding & Finger Twitch Training” is recommended as a pre-requisite but not required as such. COMPOSITION
Arranging for Singer-Songwriters If you only have one instrument to accompany yourself with, playing the right note at the right time can make all the difference between engaging or boring your listeners. You can embrace your instrumental limitation and make it a special and intimate experience for your audience. But what are the “right notes”? What is meant with the phrase “less is more”? How can I avoid sounding like a typical campfire guitarist or bar pianist? This arranging course is about how to get the most out of a deceivingly limited instrumentation by carefully choosing complementary notes and planning out how the energy builds and drops throughout a song. Concepts are neither instrument nor style specific. They can be applied universally, and additionally help you improve your ability to jam with others by learning to listen for (and think about) where there is still space in the music for you to add something meaningful. |
